High school offers two highly competitive seasons. In the fall, high school teams play in the (CPHL) Colorado Prep Hockey League. In the winter, there is the Douglas County Schools sanctioned (CHSAA) Colorado High School Athletic Association season.
CPHL Season - Mid August to Mid November- link to Vista Hockey Club website; https://www.vistahockeyclub.org/
CHSAA Season - Late November to Early March
CHSAA has a strict guideline regarding when the season begins and ends, and there is no Sunday contact between the coaches and the players. The purpose of creating the CPHL is so Colorado high schools have a means by which their teams can practice and play games beginning in September rather than waiting until November.
Will my hockey player get as many games as with club hockey?
MVHS fields both a JV and a Varsity team for the CHSAA season.
The Varsity team will play a minimum of 19 games during CHSAA. The JV team will play up to 15 games during CHSAA. Other scrimmages, along with possible playoff games. may be added as the coaches feel appropriate and within the league guidelines.
Costs
CHSAA fees are typically around $1800 for both JV and Varsity (Fee could change)
All players for both JV and Varsity will have to purchase the following items. If you already have these items you are not required to purchase again. It is only for new orders or if your items need replaced due to condition or sizing etc.
1. Vista Green Helmet - $180
2. Custom Vista Gloves - $125
3. Player Team Gear Bag - $119
4. Goalie Team Gear Bag - $ 129
Where are games and practices?
All home games and practices will occur at South Suburban Sports Complex, Family Sports and Ice Ranch.
My kid attends ThunderRidge or Highlands Ranch High Schools, why does he/she play for MVHS?
It is common for high schools to join forces and field one team in a high school sport. This is more common in sports like gymnastics, hockey, girls lacrosse, and field hockey where they may not be enough participants from any one high school to field a competitive team. In Douglas County only Mountain Vista, Castle View, and Chaparral have CHSAA hockey teams, yet they represent all 9 high schools in the county.
I feel like my hockey player has a better chance of playing college hockey by sticking to Club hockey, Is that true?
No. Scouts looking for talent will find it. If your hockey player is talented enough to play Juniors or college hockey, then playing high school hockey versus club hockey will not affect their chances of moving on. MVHS has sent several players on to play Junior hockey and college hockey. High School also offers opportunities for nationwide exposure if your player is selected to play in the NIT tournament for Team Colorado.
